Screening for Unhealthy Alcohol Use

Nurse Talking with Senior Patient Medical Team

Friday, January 20, 2017, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. ET.

Primary care providers are in an excellent position to identify and manage patients at risk for unhealthy alcohol use, which can take a serious toll on the health of patients.  Because it can be difficult to assess the nature and severity of alcohol use, it often goes undiagnosed and when left untreated can result in severe or fatal outcomes. Your patients look to you for advice about the risks and benefits associated with drinking.

Join HSAG and Dr. Jonas to learn about screening, interventions, and medications that can be effective in changing many patients' drinking behavior before problems become chronic.

Webinar Objectives:

1. Describe unhealthy alcohol use – Understand how to distinguish risky drinking from alcohol use disorders.

2. Describe the burden of disease related to unhealthy alcohol use.

3. Describe an evidence-based, practical approach for:

– Screening for unhealthy alcohol use

– Providing appropriate interventions, with focus on Behavioral counseling for risky drinking in primary care.

-- Medications for alcohol use disorders in outpatient settings.
