Programs
For more than 40 years, HSAG has worked to improve the quality of healthcare services for Medicare patients to achieve the best possible patient outcomes through our work as part of the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) Program. The QIO Program is a national healthcare initiative whose primary focus is to improve the healthcare that Medicare patients receive.
About the Program
The QIO Program is mandated by law as part of the Social Security Act and is directed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which is the federal agency that oversees Medicare and Medicaid.
The QIO Program is tasked with protecting the Medicare Trust Fund.
By the Numbers
Serve 12% of the nation’s Medicare population
Collaborate with 300+ hospitals
Work with 1,000+ nursing homes
Our work constantly adapts and evolves based on national governmental healthcare priorities. This allows us to remain on the leading edge and effective in improving healthcare quality for Medicare beneficiaries.
HSAG employs quality improvement specialists with a wide range of expertise, including clinical, public health, epidemiology, and healthcare administration, spanning the continuum of care.
Our work brings together all healthcare settings to ensure each understands their impact in the overall healthcare continuum, and that communication and appropriate care occurs as patients move across settings.
Our work is data-driven and supported by our highly skilled and specialized Analytics Division. This support allows our staff to educate providers using accurate and timely data to make the greatest impact.
Program goals
HSAG works in partnership with doctors, nurses, providers, patients, local communities, and healthcare stakeholders to drive positive patient health outcomes.
We equip providers with the knowledge and resources to improve quality and engage Medicare beneficiaries, family members, and caregivers to ensure their voices are heard and incorporated in quality improvement activities.
HSAG evolves alongside the changing healthcare environment to prioritize CMS initiatives that promote patient-centered care and address emerging healthcare challenges.
Innovation
Gain access to customized data for hospital, nursing home, and physician office quality improvement efforts. Our data application provides access to facility-specific Medicare Fee-for-Service data, performance dashboards, run charts, and intervention tracking.

Our team hosts community and statewide education and training programs to promote best practices, tools, resources, and collaboration. We work with providers, health plans, departments of health, and associations on strategic initiatives to improve care quality throughout the care continuum.
